Origin/Negara Asal: Malaysia, Indonesia, Himalaya, Molluccas, Phillipines
Plant height/ Ketinggian pokok: 1.5 to/hingga 3 meters

Facts about the plants/ Fakta mengenai pokok Sembung:
  • Sembong is one of herbal medicine approved by the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) / Salah satu pokok herba yang diluluskan Jabatan Kesihatan Negara Filipina.
  • The plant is a strongly aromatic and smell strongly of camphor/ Berbau kapur barus
  • The Malays rely upon the warm, stimulating, and sudorific effects of medicines prepared from it / Orang Melayu mengamalkan penggunaan ubat ini untuk membuat badan panas dan berpeluh
  • The roots should be taken from young plant, according to old folks, if roots taken after flowering, then it is tasteless./ Akar pokok ini diambil sebelum berbunga, katanya selepas berbunga rasanya tawar.

Medicinal uses
  • Anti urolithiasis-the process of forming stone in kidney. Bladder or urinary tract. /Menggelak dari batu karang
  • Diabetes/ Kencing manis
  • Aids in treating mild hypertension / Darah tinggi
  • Diuretic- it helps dispose of excess water and sodium (salt) in the body/ Untuk buang air dan garam dari badan (penggalak kencing)
  • Treatment of kidney disorders/ Sakit buah pinggang
  • To treat colds/ Demam selsema
  • Reumatism/Sengal tulang, sendi atau otot.
  • Fever/Demam panas
  • Anti-diarrheic /cirit birit
  • Anti-gastralgic properties/ mengelak sakit perut
  • Helps remove worms/ Ubat cacing
  • Treats dysentery/Disentri
  • In Kelantan a decoction from roots is taken by women for menorrhagia/ DiKelantan digunakan untuk melancarkan haid
  • In java a decoction from the leaves is taken by women for menorrhagia/ Di Jawa Indonesia digunakan untuk melancarkan haid
  • Boil with melastoma and mangosteen peel and is used in a bath for flatulence, and tenderness of the leg/Direbus dengan daun senduduk dan kulit manggis untuk melembutkan kaki.
  • Dried pounded leaves blown into horse nostril for cold (Ridley-Journal. Straights Med.Asocc. 5. 1897 page126)/ Debu daun kering disembur masuk kehidung kuda untuk ubati selsema.
  • In Sarawak, it is used in childbirth, it is one of the ingredient in ointment put on the fore head , or a lotion rubbed on the abdomen and as a decoction taken internally/ DiSrawak digunakan untuk ubat selepas bersalin, salah satu ramuan untuk disapu kedahi dan perut dan air rebusan diminum
  • In Indonesia it is used for heart disease Cholera, Bleeding nose, Malaria, Diabetes, Rheumatic, blood clot, and anti-inflammatory/ Di Indoensia dugunakan untuk ubati sakit taun, darah beku dan ubat bengkak.
  • Its expectorant properties make it as a popular recommendation to be taken in as tea to treat colds./ Daun di buat teh untuk ubati batuk dan sakit tekak.
