HOW TO TRANSPLANT INSTANT PALM TREES / BAGAIMANA HENDAK PINDAHKAN DAN TANAM SEMULA POKOK PALMA SEGERA

PHOENIX SYLVESTRIS (SILVER DATE PALM)- FEATHER LEAF TYPE PALMS

LIVISTONA CHINENSIS- PALMATE/FAN TYPE OF LEAF

PTYCHOSPERMA MACARTHURII- MULTI-TRUNK TYPE OF PALM

PALM TRANSPLANT

  • Unlike trees, palm trees can be transplanted immediately after excavation
  • Extra precaution need be taken to ensure that the soft tissue part of the palm tree (base of frond) will not take pressure of any sort otherwise your palm will not survive

TRIMMING, PRUNING OR REMOVING OF LEAVES

  • Trimming of leaves depend on the size of the root ball, the smaller the root ball then more leaves need to be removed, trimmed or pruned. Some time we have no choice but to cut off all the leaves from the palm tree up to the base of the frond leaving only the shoot.
  • Trimming, or removing of the leaves is to reduce water loss. If water loss cannot be recovered from absorption then the palm will not survive.

BRACING TO PROTECT THE NECK OF THE PALM (BASE OF FROND/SUCCULENT END OF THE STEM WHICH ARE EDIBLE IN MALAYSIA)- THIS PART OF TRUNK LIKE CABBAGE INSIDE IS VERY VULNERABLE AND SENSITIVE)

  • For single trunk palm, 3 or 4 bracing is required
  • For multi-trunk type of palms, use 1 timber bracing for each trunk, all the trunks should be tied together in bunch
  • Bracing must not be removed even after replanting
  • Bracing can only be removed after the palm tree shows sign of recovery
  • Palms recovered when the leaves start to shine again, fronds shows no sign of sagging and new shoot start to appear.

ROOT BALL EXCAVATION

  • Backhoe or excavator can be used, but ensure that it will not tear the root at the base
  • Preferably manual trenching to shape the root ball than followed mechanical excavation to dislodge the root ball from the ground.
  • Use sharp tools to cut and trim the root

ROOT BALL WIDTH

  • Preferably 5 times the width of the base of the trunk or clumps for multi- trunks palm
  • If root ball is too small, then more leaf must be trim or prune or remove.

ROOT BALL DEPTH

  • At least half the root ball width

ROOT BALL PROTECTION

  • Cover the root ball with hem cloth or other natural fibre base material and keep it wet.

LIFTING FOR LOADING, UNLOADING AND PLANTING

  • Use crane
  • Protect the trunk by wrapping with gunny sack or other material

TRANSPORTING

PLANTING

  • Excavate planting holes; make sure the width and depth is correct. Finish planting level (root ball level) should be the same as per original site.
  • Position the palm tree into the holes and place temporary staking
  • Fill in the with topsoil, mixed with fertilizer, hormones and vitamin into the hole
  • Then install stacking, tie or guying to protect from falling.
  • Wrap the trunk with material that can holds water

STACKING ,TYING OR GUYING

  • Stacking, tying, or guying should be done immediately after planting
  • Stacking, tying or guying should be done on 4 side
  • Can use anything, timber, metal, rope etc, as long as it will stay standing in strong wind

WATERING

  • Water from shoot to the ground
  • Water twice daily and if the weather is to hot water more often

PALM RECOVERY PLAN

  • After planting, if the leaves start to dry out one by one,
  • that shows the palm tree have problem with absorption.
  • You have no choice but to cut off all the leaves or fronds, leaving only the shoot.
  • Do not remove the timber braces
  • Increase watering
  • Water every parts including the trunk and the shoot.
